And let's not forget that the whole DLC era was kickstarted by fucking Horse Armor for Oblivion lol. This isn't exactly surprising considering that DLCs these days are used extensively by companies to make a quick buck, with many if not most of them being cosmetics and power-ups. "Expansion pack" had a neutral or positive connotation, whereas "DLC" skew more negative. The result of this is that "expansion pack", as a term, very much did not have the same connotation that "DLC" has these days. Hell, sometimes you'd even get new mechanics and systems. Expansion packs typically had a substantial amount of content, ranging from new characters, new missions, new levels, and sometimes, even a thorough rebalancing of mechanics and systems. But because they were more expensive, developers had to make sure that those expansion packs were meaty. Because they were sold physically in boxes and all, they were more expensive than the average DLC sold today, which is usually cosmetics and other insignificant content. I was born in the 80s and grew up with additional content being sold in stores labeled as "expansion packs". I was thinking about this yesterday, and I wonder if the disparity of opinions on this could be explained by age, with older people finding the term less pejorative, and thus not insulting to devs, while younger ones feel the opposite.
You want my own personal solutions to this? Sure. It's just a real trash way of going about it and I feel we can and should be better than that.
So when someone says it's DLC or whatever it's just shitting on the actual real hard tedious work that normal everyday people like you and I put in. What are you doing posting an opinion just to dip out, especially when you're taken to task after dropping a hot take?Īnd to rant a bit while we're at it: my problem with the DLC argument is that it completely disregards the work that goes into making a game, EVEN if it turns out to be disappointing. I'm leaving this thread before I get banned for having a negative opinion." And etcetera.Īt the end of the day this is a discussion forum after all. When you drop a spicy take like that, don't be upset when people snap back in an equally spicy way.Īfter getting the aforementioned spicy retorts, don't be that asshole that says "huh, guess I can't say anything bad about a game on THIS place." Or "X game company bias/hivemind strikes again. If you seriously 100% believe that a sequel feels like overpriced DLC.
